After 40 years of development, the Department of Blood Transfusion of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University founded in 1982, has become a comprehensive department which integrates blood transfusion treatment, laboratory diagnosis of Transfusion-transmitted Diseases, teaching, scientific research. Our department has several laboratories, such as Blood Group Typing Reference Laboratory, HIV Screening and Confirmatory Testing Laboratory.

Featured technology

During past decades, the department accumulated rich experience in laboratory diagnosis of transfusion-transmitted infection, neonatal hemolytic disease and autoimmune hemolytic disease,patient blood management and haemovigilance. A blood transfusion clinic was opened in May 2019.Its main responsibilities include blood group typing, unexpected antibody screening and unexpected antibody identification, pre-transfusion testing, crossmatch, direct antiglobulin test, indirect antiglobulin test, laboratory diagnosis of neonatal hemolytic disease, autoimmune hemolytic counterpart, therapeutic apheresis, therapeutic plasma exchange, preoperative autologous blood donation, thromboelastography, patient blood management, haemovigilance, blood transfusion quality management, blood-borne occupational exposure, transfusion transmission investigation.

Platform& system:

The department of Blood Transfusion has a service room of about 1,000 square meters. It is equipped with American AutoVue automatic blood group typing and crossmatch blood analysis system, American Termo Fisher Formabio-safety cabinet, Mindray automatic chemiluminescence immunoanalyzer, TEG thrombus elastic graph (American Blood Technology Company), Nangel blood component separator, autoclave sterilizer,bio-safety cover removal machine and other advanced equipment at home and abroad. Equipped with cold chain temperature control system to ensure the safety of blood transfusion.

Education and training:

We undertakes tasks of teaching medical blood transfusion course for students from Chongqing Medical University and the internship of medicine laboratory specialty interns of the medical colleges in Chongqing. We also take the responsibility to apply national and provincial continuing education projects in transfusion medicine. Our department has also attracted many trainee doctors from other hospital in Chongqing district. Since 1982, we committed to building a undergraduate-extension training program, with the aim of exploring a better path of cultivating capable laboratorians in China.

Academic outcomes: Over the recent years, the Department has won 4 national projects, 3 provincial projects, and 1 patents for utility models. The department published 13 SCI articles. The staff members took the lead or participated in the formation of 1 industrial standards of the State. 3 stuff served as deputy editors-in-chief or editors of some professional textbooks or books by publishing houses, such as People’s Medical Publishing House and Higher Education Press.

The Blood Transfusion Department has now 28 staff members, including 3 with senior titles, 12 with mid-level titles, 5 with a doctoral degree or higher, 7 with master’s degree, 1 post-doctors, 2 master’sadvisers, 2 physician, 1 pathologist, 22technician, 1 scientific researcher.
